The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic minority in Myanmar. They consider themselves indigenous to the Arakan region, but the Buddhist portion of Myanmar’s society views them as illegal immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh. The Rohingya are denied access to public education, healthcare, job opportunities, and freedom of movement. They are discriminated against and persecuted. In June and October 2012, a total of 192 people were killed, 265 were injured, and as many as 8,614 homes were burned (including a significant portion in the provincial capital, Sittwe). Over 100,000 people were left homeless and ended up in three temporary camps—in Sittwe, Myaybon, and Pauk Taw.
The photos are from the camp in Sittwe.
